Hurricane Miriam

Spot any difference?

As Hurricane Miriam circles off the coast of Mexico, Miriam Hemmer rages from the safety of  her boppy.

Thankfully, all good hurricanes slow eventually, and Hurricane Miriam has calmed to a tropical storm.

p.s. please know I did not fashion my baby girl's hair into a mohawk.  Some of her baby fuzz is falling out (affectionately referred to as her male-pattern baldness by her daddy) but there is a thick row of hair right down the middle.

p.p.s. how cute is this outfit??

99th Percentile

We had our 2 month check up today complete with our first round of immunizations.  Miriam was a trooper (mommy almost cried) and was all smiles for the doctor and nurses; quite the charmer.  She's over 24" long, 12 lb and 4 oz.  She's 99th percentile (!!) in length, 70th percentile in weight, and 92nd percentile in head.  She's long, trim, with a big ol' head!  What a growing girl!

Waiting patiently at the doctor's:

First lunch out:

Watching Uncle Timmy's soccer game online:

Playing on her mat with her fancy rattle bracelets:

Go Tigers!

Watching mama cook breakfast:

All smiles!

7 weeks and growing

Miriam turned 7 weeks yesterday.  I'm falling more in love everyday!

She watched (slept through) her first Clemson game last Saturday and celebrated daddy's 32nd birthday.

Again, sleeping through football this weekend.  We'll have to work on this:

Showing off her cute new headband:

What a difference a few seconds can make...

Random acts of cuteness:
Hanging out in my Boppy

Watching mommy make her morning coffee.  She seems a lot nicer after she drinks that stuff!

Snuggling with mommy in the morning

Just relaxing in my bouncer

Arrrrgh I'm a pirate!  Mommy made me this great headband, but I think it's cooler as an eye patch!

So sweet:)

"Ok mom, enough with the pictures! This is embarrassing!"

From about 3 weeks ago -- WOW -- you can really see how much she's changed and grown!

And my favorite, her first smiley picture. She gave me her first smile last week after a fresh diaper change and snuggle. She's becoming more engaging and smiley everyday; mama's reward for many sleepless nights and epic cry-fests.

How can you not adore this face?!

One Month Old!

Hard to believe, but Miriam will be one month old on Thursday and it is 4 weeks from her birth yesterday.  She is growing like a weed and getting some lovely chubby thighs and arms.  She likes Skyping with Grandma and Grandpa, napping in her Snuggabunny, and has started making the most adorable coo and sigh sounds this week.  She still hates diaper changes; they invariably end with her crying, hiccuping or crying because she's hiccuping.

We still don't really have a schedule, which is probably harder on mommy than Miriam.  She fills our days with eating, diaper changes, and naps.  Mommy tries to nap when Miriam sleeps, and squeeze in other luxuries like laundry and showering.  Miriam eats about every 2.5 - 3 hours during the day and 3-4 at night.  We're usually up twice in the night and generally she goes right back to sleep after eating and a diaper change.  Overall, we are progressing well and learning more about each other everyday; of course, we both have our days, but have survived one another so far.

We took our first trip to Target and get out of the house on walks most days.  She really likes the Moby Wrap carrier, which I used at Target.  She slept peacefully around the whole store.
In Target - notice the pirate eye - aaarrrrgggh

Photo shoot - showing off her new hot onesie!

Pats Fan.  She looks very worried about this year's season!  Miriam loves to furrow her brow when she's deep in thought or really concentrating on a task at hand - she gets that from her daddy!

Sleeping like an angel. She likes to stay warm in the morning with the blanket Grandma made for her.

She's so thoughtful; she sent a picture card to Uncle Timmy for his birthday.

Meeting Sonia G. She's met lots of new friends recently!

Miriam Rose

July 23, 2012 we headed to the hospital for an early morning induction.  Nervous, unsure what to expect, and so ready to meet our little one.
In the Labor and Delivery elevator, on our way!
They started us on "gels" to get my contractions going and we did 4 hours of alternating laying in bed and walking the hospital.  We got very familiar with the halls of Flagstaff Medical Center as the contractions became more and more intense.  I was still breathing through them well up through 5 cm.  The contractions started to stall and they decided to move us up to an IV of pitocin.  Things started moving more quickly and getting much more intense from that point.  I set a goal to birth without pain medications, and I was able to see that through to the end.  After another couple of hours, 5 more centimeters, and about 45 minutes of pushing Miriam Rose was born.  She came into the world at 11:31pm July 23, 2012 and was 7lb 14oz, 19 3/4 inches.  Daddy got to cut her umbilical cord and mommy got to hold her close.  She cried at first, but then shot open her eyes and took it all in.  I'll never forget staring into her eyes while she grasped my finger with her tiny fist.
Her first picture, getting weighed and cleaned up.

Recovering with Mommy
I lost a lot of blood after her birth and I am so thankful for the wonderful nurses and our OB.  I felt that I was  in such steady hands and honestly didn't even know something was wrong until it was over.  The first week was a tough recovery for me; I was really weak and struggled to do much of anything on my own.  Jason was a rock as always, and didn't leave my or Miriam's side for days. Those first days at home were a bit of a blur, but we soaked in every moment, movement, and change in our little girl.  Already we could see she was determined, strong, and very sweet. She does not like having her diaper changed (how embarrassing mama!), gas, or poopy diapers, but rarely cries and lets us console her quickly.  She loves eating, sleeping, and cuddling with mommy and daddy.  She grows by the second and I am in awe of her tiny, beautiful self.

Heading Home!

In the recliner with daddy

Hello world!  She wore her fancy shirt to meet Grandma and Grandpa Hemmer on Skype!

Wide eyed and curious.  From the moment she was born she has been wide eyed when she's awake.

We'll pretend it's a "real" smile :)

Yawn!

Oooooh!

Catching flies!

I kiss this face all day long

Taking our first walk. AKA mama and baby venture outside for the first time
Grandma and Grandpa Bailey are here to visit for 10 days.  It was a joy to watch them meet her for the first time. We have all waited so long for our baby girl.  Grandma takes care of us all and it is so nice to have extra hands around the house.  It's honestly the only reason I've found a few moments to write here.  I'm already dreading their return home at the end of the week, but Miriam, Jason and I will soak up all their presence while we can.

Tomorrow Miriam will be 2 weeks old.  It is so cliche, but honestly true that time really goes by too quickly.

We are so thankful for all the gifts, flowers, food and well wishes that have flooded our front door, inbox, and facebook pages.  So many of you who read this blog are far from us, but we have felt your presence and love so much.
